No Confirmed Cases of Zika Virus in Kansas
Kansas Ag Connection - 02/08/2016

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has not had any confirmed cases of Zika virus in Kansas.

Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week.

There is no vaccine to prevent Zika virus disease. People can prevent themselves from getting Zika by avoiding mosquito bites. Mosquitoes that spread Zika virus bite mostly during the daytime and are the same mosquitoes that spread dengue and chikungunya viruses.

When traveling to countries where Zika virus or other viruses spread by mosquitoes are found, take the following steps:

-- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants

-- Stay in places with air conditioning or that use window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside

-- Sleep under a mosquito bed net if you are overseas or outside and not able to protect yourself from mosquito bites

-- Use insect repellents containing an EPA-registered active ingredient on skin and clothing, including DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol or IS 3535.

o If you are using sunscreen, apply sunscreen before applying insect repellent

-- Treat clothing and gear with permethrin or purchase permethrin-treated items

Pregnant women should consider postponing travel to areas where Zika virus transmission is ongoing.

More information about Zika virus and the countries and territories with active Zika virus transmission can be found on the CDC website at www.cdc.gov/zika/.
