Cold, Wet Weather Descend on Kansas

For the week ending Sunday, temperatures were six to eight degrees below normal across much of the State, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Rainfall amounts of one inch or more were common. There were 3.5 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture rated 2 percent very short, 6 short, 80 adequate, and 12 surplus. Subsoil moisture rated 3 percent very short, 10 short, 80 adequate, and 7 surplus.

Winter wheat condition rated 1 percent very poor, 7 poor, 33 fair, 51 good, and 8 excellent. Winter wheat headed was 96 percent, near 92 last year, but ahead of the five-year average of 83. Coloring was 16 percent, ahead of 11 last year, but near 18 average.

Corn condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 32 fair, 62 good, and 4 excellent. Corn planted was 90 percent, ahead of 82 last year, but near 88 average. Emerged was 61 percent, equal to last year, and near 60 average.

Soybeans planted was 21 percent, near 19 last year, but well behind 41 average. Emerged was 7 percent, near 10 last year, but behind 16 average.

Sorghum planted was 6 percent, near 8 last year, but behind 16 average.

Cotton planted was 6 percent, near 8 last year, but well behind 28 average.

Alfalfa hay first cutting was 31 percent complete.

Pasture and range conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 26 fair, 61 good, and 11 excellent. Stock water supplies were 2 percent very short, 5 short, 87 adequate, and 6 surplus.
