In The Raw Sweeteners Welcomes 1,000 Troops with BBQ Brethren
Kansas Ag Connection - 05/27/2016

To kick off Fleet Week, Brooklyn's In The Raw sweeteners teamed up with the BBQ Brethren this week to feed more than 1,000 troops, including active duty Sailors, Marines and WWII Veterans with a special 'welcome home' BBQ celebration to thank those that have selflessly served our nation.

In The Raw sweeteners provided key ingredients, including Sugar In The Raw and Agave In The Raw to be used for the special rubs for the award winning pitmasters, who brought their smokers and grills from five states to give the troops an unparalleled BBQ experience in Brooklyn.

In The Raw's participation to help serve the troops was personal but also symbolic of coming full circle for the company. In The Raw's founder, Ben Eisenstadt owned and operated the Brooklyn Navy Yard cafeteria until the end of World War II. After the cafeteria's close in 1945, he began Cumberland Packing Corp., which produces In The Raw sweeteners, that still neighbors the Navy Yard to this day.

"Brooklyn has been Cumberland Packing Corp.'s home for over 70 years and although the company no longer serves as a cafeteria, we were happy to help provide a few ingredients that hopefully made this event a little bit 'sweeter'. It was great to be able to go back to our "roots" for a day and help serve the Navy," said Steven Eisenstadt, CEO, Cumberland Packing Corp.

The event which took place at the Cruise Terminal in Red Hook, docked two Destroyers and one Coast Guard ship--the USS Farragut (DDG 99), USS Bainbridge, and the USCGC Forward (WMEC 911). Guests were treated to music, Kansas City spare ribs, Santa Maria tri tip, Iowa pork loin, slow smoked chicken and New York -style sausage.
