Kansas Crops Showing Heat Stress

For the week ending Sunday, above-normal temperatures stressed crops, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Precipitation of up to an inch was recorded around parts of the State. There were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture rated 4 percent very short, 21 short, 70 adequate, and 5 surplus. Subsoil moisture rated 3 percent very short, 17 short, 77 adequate, and 3 surplus.

Corn condition rated 1 percent very poor, 6 poor, 26 fair, 57 good, and 10 excellent. Corn silking was 86 percent, ahead of 75 last year and 76 for the five-year average. Corn dough was 13 percent, near 15 last year, but behind 26 average.

Soybean condition rated 2 percent very poor, 8 poor, 34 fair, 50 good, and 6 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 56 percent, ahead of 43 last year and 50 average. Setting pods was 17 percent, near 13 last year, and ahead of 11 average.

Sorghum condition rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 25 fair, 62 good, and 9 excellent. Sorghum headed was 27 percent, ahead of 9 last year and 11 average. Coloring was 1 percent, near 0 both last year and average.

Cotton condition rated 1 percent very poor, 1 poor, 32 fair, 63 good, and 3 excellent. Cotton squaring was 53 percent, near 51 last year, but behind 66 average. Setting bolls was 8 percent, near 4 last year and 11 average.

Sunflower condition rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 27 fair, 65 good, and 5 excellent. Sunflowers emerged was 96 percent, near 94 last year, and equal to average. Blooming was 20 percent, ahead of 13 last year and 15 average.

Alfalfa hay condition rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 31 fair, 58 good, and 5 excellent. Alfalfa hay second cutting was 95 percent complete, near 93 last year and 94 average. Third cutting was 31 percent complete, near 35 last year and 33 average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 26 fair, 60 good, and 8 excellent. Stock water supplies were 2 percent very short, 7 short, 88 adequate, and 3 surplus.
